I found myself thinking about the thing in Norway and terrorism today. There should be no need to clarify what I think about the actual incident, but I will anyway. I think that any sort of terrorism is bad. I also think that any type of religious extremism can easily lead into violence and pain.
What I’d rather talk about is the response to this. The first reaction to the news seemed to be “well, it’s obviously the Muslims”, even the news-feed I followed said this. Then, when it turned out that the shooter was in fact a christian and a far-right radical the reaction was quite interesting to me. I saw a few responses that were present with most people. Either they said that he’s just a single nutter, who clearly just was a psychopath and that’s the end of that, they said that he was not really a Christian, but rather just says so and is probably a secret Muslim or a satanist, or that it’s really a conspiracy by the liberal government.
Of these three I will address the first two, as the third one does not deserve any attention. First of all, the lone lunatic theory. This simply is not the case. You can not delude yourself into thinking that these people do not exist, other then the loonies. It should not come to anyone as a surprise that things like this do happen, when the widely accepted and defended holy book, the bible is thought to be infallible in many places and includes insanely violent parts as well as god directly calling for murder murder and when we have such a large anti-muslim movement in both Europe and America, who don’t really receive any backlash or outcry, but rather get to go about their hate mongering without much questioning.
As for the second, he is not a “fake christian”, which I think was my favorite quote from the coverage. He IS, in fact, following the word of the bible. Just because he isn’t a liberal, feelgood Christian, doesn’t mean that he isn’t a Christian. He just happens to be the type of Christian that embarrasses the others, the that type hasn’t been dragged kicking and screaming from the Dark Ages.
